Building an organization that can actually deliver is much harder.

Organizations rarely struggle because they have never heard of Scrum, product ownership, Lean, or Agile. They struggle when these ideas meet reality: multiple stakeholders, specialist knowledge, architecture, operational constraints, governance, competing priorities, and teams with very different levels of experience.

Beyond Agile is a two-day leadership training developed by The Shakti Company for people who are responsible for making delivery work in that reality.

It is not another introduction to Agile. Instead, we look at what happens after the frameworks have been introduced: how you create clarity, organize collaboration, develop capable teams, and turn an ambition into something people can actually deliver.

From process to product

Many organizations become very good at organizing work without becoming equally good at delivering valuable products.

Backlogs grow. Meetings multiply. Roles are defined. Processes are documented. Yet teams can still struggle to answer surprisingly fundamental questions:

What are we actually trying to build? Who needs it? What value should it create? What should we do first? And who has the knowledge and authority to make those decisions?

Beyond Agile starts there.

Participants learn practical ways to move from a broad organizational ambition to a product vision, identify the people and knowledge needed to develop it, and progressively turn that vision into something a team can understand and deliver.

Product delivery is a team capability

One of the central ideas of Beyond Agile is that successful delivery cannot depend on a single Product Owner, architect, manager, or other expert.

Strong teams distribute knowledge and responsibility while still providing clear leadership.

That means understanding when a team needs direction and when it needs autonomy; how specialists contribute without becoming bottlenecks; how managers remain involved without taking over; and how Product Owners, technical leaders, domain experts and team members collectively develop the product.

We explore how the capabilities of individuals and teams develop over time — and why the leadership approach that works with a novice may actively hinder an expert.

Seeing the product before building it

A substantial part of the training is hands-on.

Participants work with techniques for discovering and communicating a product before disappearing into a large backlog of requirements. We use simple models to make complexity visible: actors and their goals, use cases, information and data models, dependencies, boundaries and priorities.

The objective isn’t to produce documentation for its own sake.

It is to create shared understanding.

Participants experience how relatively simple visual models can expose missing assumptions, reveal conflicting expectations and give business and technical people a common language for discussing the product.

Choosing what not to build

Product leadership also means making choices.

Beyond Agile examines the difference between supporting a process and trying to reproduce every part of that process inside a product. Participants practice distinguishing the capabilities that belong at the heart of a product from interactions, exceptions and supporting activities that may be handled perfectly well elsewhere.

At the same time, we challenge the opposite mistake: reducing scope so aggressively that the organization loses important information or creates permanent manual work outside the product.

The goal is not simply a smaller backlog. It is a more deliberate product.

Beyond efficiency

Fast teams aren’t necessarily effective teams.

The training explores the relationship between efficiency and proficiency: how quickly work gets done versus the capability with which people understand problems, make decisions and solve them.

We look at how expertise develops, how leadership needs to change as proficiency grows, and why optimizing every individual for maximum utilization can make the overall organization slower.

This leads naturally into questions about autonomy, specialization, collaboration, bottlenecks and organizational design.

Organizations are systems

Products and teams don’t operate in isolation. They exist inside larger systems.

Beyond Agile therefore also looks beyond the Scrum Team itself. Organizational structures, reporting lines, approval mechanisms, incentives and governance all influence how work actually gets done — sometimes in ways nobody intended.

Using ideas from systems thinking, participants learn to recognize recurring organizational patterns and to ask a useful question:

Is this really a problem with the team, or is the system producing exactly the behaviour it was designed to produce?

What you will work with

During the two days, participants encounter and apply ideas including:

product vision and product discovery

stakeholder and knowledge-holder involvement

focus groups and collaborative decision-making

actors, goals and use cases

data and information modelling

prioritization and deliberate scope reduction

Product Owner and technical-lead collaboration

proficiency and the development of expertise

team autonomy and leadership

bottlenecks and dependencies

systems thinking and organizational behaviour

balancing speed, quality and sustainable delivery

The emphasis throughout is on application rather than terminology. Exercises, examples and discussion connect the concepts to situations participants recognize from their own organizations.

Who is Beyond Agile for?

Beyond Agile is designed for people who influence how products and services are conceived, organized and delivered.

That includes Product Owners, managers, team leads, Scrum Masters, architects, senior specialists and others who find themselves connecting organizational goals with the people who have to turn those goals into reality.

Although many examples come from software and digital product development, the principles are deliberately broader. The same challenges occur in operational services, government, healthcare, transport, manufacturing and other environments where multidisciplinary teams need to solve complex problems together.

Experience behind the training

Anupam Shakti has spent more than a decade training and working with organizations, including environments shaped by Lean thinking such as Toyota. Her experience combines training, Product Ownership and Agile Delivery Leadership, with a strong emphasis on helping people apply principles in real working environments rather than simply teaching a framework.

Beyond Agile combines that perspective with the product-development experience of Rudi Niemeijer, who has spent much of his career training people and developing products and organizations, including founding Cursusburo and leading complex digital product development.

Together, they bring two perspectives to the classroom: developing people and developing products.

That combination is central to Beyond Agile.

Practical information

Duration

3 full days, or 2 days and an evening

Format

Interactive training, exercises, models, discussion and practical cases

Audience

Product Owners, managers, team leads, Scrum Masters, architects and senior team members

Group size

Approximately 8–12 participants

Language

English

Location

In-company or by arrangement

Bring your own complexity

Beyond Agile works particularly well as an in-company training.
